REVIEW: X-Men Marvel Legends Storm Figure (Vintage Series)

As unlikely as it may be, the final member of the Jim Lee X-Men Marvel Legends figures lineup that Hasbro needed to create wasn’t one of the more obscure characters like Jubilee or Bishop—it was actually among the most popular and iconic: Storm! But at long last, the Vintage X-Men Marvel Legends Storm figure is shipping out from online retailers and quickly selling out on store shelves—but is this the definitive Ororo Monroe for the ages we’ve all been waiting for?

X-Men Legends 2019 Storm White Costume Six Inch Figure

Hasbro is spoiling the heck out of X-Men fans this year, as we’re getting two unofficial X-Men bonus waves in the form of the X-Force Series and Vintage Series. They’re making killer use of these waves, too, giving us some of the most important remaining characters like Mr. Sinister and Nightcrawler.

But the arguable headliner of the two waves is a figure that’s been long (and loudly) demanded: Jim Lee Storm in white costume! I’m sure we’ll see silver and/or black variants down the road, but for now, let’s taking a look at the team-completing white costume Storm…

Vintage Marvel Legends Storm Figure Packaged

First off, I think it’s pretty appropriate that this Storm figure that is closely tied to the early 90s (although it’s sort of become her iconic look) is coming on a throwback Toybiz-styled early 90s retro cardback. It’s a real shame we didn’t see more of the Jim Lee X-Men released in this style of packaging in retrospect!

Upon the first revealed photos of this Vintage Marvel Legends Storm figure (she wasn’t at New York Toy Fair, after all), I was ready to declare this the be-all, end-all perfect 6” Storm Legends figure we’d all been waiting for. Now that I’ve spent some time with her in-hand… I’m not ready to assert that she’s at quite that level.

2019 Hasbro Marvel Legends Storm Jim Lee 6" Figure

As advertised, this is an X-Men 1992 animated style Storm costume. It’s white with yellow accents, although Hasbro has selected a glossy white plastic and glossy yellow paint, so in the right lighting it could maybe, sort of, kind of pass for being silver and gold (although I’m reasonably sure we’ll see this mold repainted in those colors soon enough).

The paintwork on this figure has been meticulously applied, and I’m overall happy with the look of the deco throughout. She also looks great next to her fellow X-Men comrades. Success!

The Ororo Munroe portrait is also a big winner, as the face and hair clearly evoke the Wind-Rider. The lightning bolt earrings are painted nicely, and the wash on the hair makes the sculpting detail pop. Fantastic.

6" Storm Hasbro Jim Lee White Costume Action Figure

This is a modern Hasbro Marvel Legends Figure, and as such, she can stand up with no issues in most poses and has an impressive amount of articulation… although there are also some inhibiting factors that muck up the range of motion somewhat.

Lightning Effects Pieces with Vintage Series Storm Legends Figure

Storm’s full articulation scheme is:

  • Ball-Hinge Head/Shoulders/Elbows
  • Ball-Jointed Upper Torso and Hips
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists
  • Swivel Thighs
  • Double-Jointed Knees
  • Hinged Ankles with Rockers

Shoulder Pads Falling off Jim Lee Storm Legends Figure

While I was initially delighted by the soft plastic shoulder pads, thinking they’d allow easy posing with Ororo’s arms straight up in the air, I was mortified to find that if you gently raise her arms too much the shoulder pads unpeg and fall off completely. It’s a huge limiting factor and really annoying—my biggest complaint about this whole figure, honestly.

The shoulder pad pegs are also holding on the fabric cape, which looks great in theory—but wrinkly and more than a little bit cheap in person. You can probably futz the soft goods cape to look better with some effort, but its thin material and pre-wrinkled appearance fresh from the package bum me out.

Marvel Legends Storm Figure and Accessories Vintage Series

Finally, we’ve got accessories: of which Storm only gets the reused yellow lightning effects from last year’s Mohawk Storm figure. I didn’t like how gummy and fiddly these effects were then, and I still don’t love them now. They make for a cool display if they stay in place, but I hate setting them up.

Vintage Marvel Legends Storm Review Hasbro 2019

Overall: Ultimately, there’s a couple little design snafus with this X-Men Legends Storm figure that hold it back from the highest heights of perfection. The shoulder pad design is really irritating, and the wrinkly fabric cape and gummy lightning effects aren’t ideal.

Even so, this is still easily the best Jim Lee era Storm action figure that’s ever been made, and an absolute must for the collections of those building the 90s/Animated team. Not perfect, but still pretty great.

REVIEW: X-Men Marvel Legends Storm Figure (Vintage Series) — 15 Comments

  1. I don’t consider Storm being the “final” member that needed done from the Jim Lee era. I think that title belongs to Jean Grey, as we will finally see her in December in the 3 pack with Wolverine and Cyclops.

I didn’t get to preorder Storm, because she was sold out when I got to a computer because the preorder went up on weekday when most people work. So, I don’t have her in hand yet, but I do have an order in that will ship in October. I have no complaints about this figure from what I’ve seen in pictures. I think even the cape will be fine with me. I can’t wait to have her and Jean Grey complete the Animated Series team, minus Morph, but I was never a fan of him, anyway.

    • We already had a Jim Lee Jean, though. Hasbro did her in the Rocket Raccoon’s series in 2013. Their new one is just… better! =D

      • OK, but for me, Jean is the last member. I just started collecting during the Juggernaut BAF wave, was that 2016? So, I never had that Jean Grey, plus the new one comes with the ponytail version that has never been released, so I guess I’m stating that it’s more the final member of the animated series, than actual Jim Lee. Either way, I’m glad the team is complete! 🙂

And Thank You for doing reviews. I look forward to seeing your take on these figures!

  2. Looks pretty nice overall, though I could have told you from the early pictures that the cape would be really cheap and flimsy. It screams it. I’m gonna hold off on yellow and white shoulder pads Storm though because this version really means nothing to me personally. I got my 80’s mohawk Storm from the Apocalypse wave and am waiting for an original 70’s Storm – from the period mainly of artists like Dave Cockrum and John Byrne. Although I promise they won’t give her the shapely body from the Byrne run on X-men. They don’t make figures like that.

  3. Storm’s my favorite. Of course I’ll buy this one… BUT more on my mind… where’s classic Storm!?!?

  4. Why does everyone want to see a black or silver Storm? When did she even wear that? I read 90s X-Men on a regular basis and I don’t even remember that being a thing. I remember her white costume and somewhat recall the not-really-Punk-Rock-Storm. But that’s pretty much it.

This Storm is pretty awesome. She replaced my Toy Biz X-Men Classics Storm. But she has the same problem the old one has. Which is; she’s a huge pain in the ass to stand.

This figure remind anyone else of the old X-Men Water Wars Storm?

    • She had it on in the X-men video game from the 1990’s(beat em up)and I also had a black suit Storm action figure from toybiz back in the early 1990’s and they had the same figure in white or silver to so that’s just a few examples of her in a those outfits.

    • I guess Jim Lee liked to overuse hash lines, because it always appeared black to me. Also, it looks like the 80’s Storm costume minus the lightning bolt with X symbols and a cape added.

I also just googled and found the Jim Lee trading cards from that era. Her costume was definitely colored black. The cartoon version was white.

    • X-Men, children of the atom video game. Also a lot of collectible cards had her drawn in her silver suit.

      • Oh yeah that was the other X-Men game I remember her using the silver suit on and she had her classic black suit on in the konami beat em up.

    • Water Wars was a series responsible for some of the best Jim Lee inspired and other 90s era X-Men figures in 5 inch scale. Storm, Wolverine, even Excalibur Nightcrawler were all awesome when they were released.

    • Well, you obviously didn’t because this costume is and has always been black in the comics. Storm’s first white costume wasn’t until she rejoined the X-Men after her marriage to Black Panther. This costume was designed by Jim Lee, who has said multiple times that he designed this costume black from day 1, as Storm had always worn black and this was no different. This costume being white is an error we can thank fans of the cartoon for, because they clearly get whatever they want.

  5. This is the final and for me as storm and 90s tas XMEN fan the most anticipated figure by far! Glad to replace my old toy is storm with this but will keep her anyway as a collector. Got a protip for you: use a blow dryer to get rid of the wrinkles, just not too much power. I did cut her cup on the up to give it more flexibility for posing. I replaced her shoes with black cats heels to make perfect 👌 her knees are her biggest weakness and could be replaced with moonstone figure parts
