One of the hottest new collectible lines of 2014 thus far has been the Funko Hikari line of Japanese style vinyl figures. The limited-edition Funko Hikaris appeared out of nowhere at the New York Toy Fair 2014 and instantly sold out across the internet as soon as online retailers began posting them. But Batman and He-Man and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans got all the love with the first batch of Funko Hikari figures, while Marvel fans were left in the dust. The disappointment for Marvel fans is over, though–at SDCC 2014 this week, a small army of Funko Hikari Spider-Man figures debuted!
Unlike most Funko products which are open-run items usually produced for several years and then retired (several Marvel POP! Vinyl figures were retired earlier this month), all Funko Hikari figures are a strict limited edition of 300-3,000 pieces. Each Hikari Funko vinyl figure retails for about $36-$50, with the price seemingly dependent upon the edition size.
When I saw the Funko Hikari vinyls for the first time at the 2014 Toy Fair in New York, I wasn’t really sure if they were going to be a popular item or not. As it turns out, they are ridiculously popular (at least, so far). Many of the first Hikari figures released just this summer have already doubled or quadrupled in price and are selling for $100-$200 on the aftermarket! Yikes–it’s the hard knocks life for Funko collectors!
Of course, all this was irrelevant until San Diego Comic Con 2014, where Funko finally premiered the first Marvel Hikari figure: Spider-Man! It looks like there are six initial Funko Hikari Spider-Man vinyls in the works: Clear Glitter Spider-Man, Metallic Spider-Man, Spider-Armor Spider-Man, Gold Spider-Man, Rainbow Metallic Spider-Man and Black Metallic Spider-Man (these are not the official names–they’re my names for them).
No release dates, edition size or further information on the Funko Spider-Man Hikari Japanese Vinyls is available at this time, but I’ll update here and on the Marvel Toy News Facebook Page once more details are available.
Anyone besides me feeling a bit of excitement about the first Marvel Funko Hikari vinyl figures?
