SDCC 2018: Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave 2 Figures! Klaue! T’Chaka!

When Hot Toys made a T’Chaka Black Panther sixth scale figure one of their summer convention exclusives, it seemed like a pretty audacious and out-of-left-field pick. I mean, c’mon: half of collectors didn’t even remember T’Chaka wearing that costume in the movie, right…? Well, turns out maybe that pick wasn’t as crazy as it seemed–because Hasbro is following suit! As part of their SDCC 2018 festivities, Hasbro has announced Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave 2–including Ulysses Klaue, King T’Chaka and more!

Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave 2 T'Challa Unmasked Figure

Had Hasbro (and other toy companies) known that Black Panther was going to end up being one of the top four highest-grossing movies of all-time domestically, I’m pretty sure we would have seen a lot more Black Panther toys and figures released this year than we have. Alas, merchandisers didn’t have that crystal ball, so the Black Panther figures that we had to choose from ended up being a mite limited.

But hey, better late than never–and Hasbro has rushed to put together a second wave of Black Panther Marvel Legends Figures to close out 2018!

While it’s far from a new character or even a new mold, the new movie Black Panther 6″ figure easily has the best Chadwick Boseman head that we’ve ever seen from Hasbro. That new Chadwick Boseman portrait is a definite winner, and is going to make me drop 20 bucks for a new head for a figure I otherwise already own.

Marvel Legends Ayo Dora Milaje Figure

The other most boring figure in Black Panther Legends Wave 2 is easily the Marvel Legends Ayo figure. Hey, I understand: this gives Hasbro another chance to reuse the tooling for the Dora Milaje mold, while also facilitating Dora Milaje army-building. I think this is a solid pick and is gonna sell like gangbusters–it’s just not a particularly enthralling one.

Marvel Legends T'Chaka Black Panther Figure

The last two movie figures in this series (there will almost certainly be 2-3 comic based figures as well) are the ones that I anticipate being the most popular in a landslide: Marvel Legends Klaue and King T’Chaka Black Panther.

The Wakandan attire add-on on the preexisting tooling almost makes T’Chaka look like a whole new figure, and is sure to appeal to collectors who wanted the T’Chaka Hot Toys but didn’t have $200+ to drop on it.

Meanwhile, the Andy Serkis likeness on that Ulysses Klaue Marvel Legends figure is downright awesome, and I love that Hasbro gave him an amused expression and the pop-out arm cannon. I never expected we’d get a 6″ Klaue movie figure, but I’m psyched that we are!

Black Panther Marvel Legends Klaue FigureShuri fans, don’t despair: Hasbro has confirmed that a movie Shuri Marvel Legends figure will be released in 2019 (Avengers 4 Legends series, anyone?). I imagine that that figure required enough new tooling that Hasbro couldn’t rush it out for this wave. The wave will also have a Build-A-Figure which hasn’t been announced yet.

The Black Panther Marvel Legends Wave 2 figures should be up for order sometime in Q4 2018, and are scheduled to be released in December 2018. As this wave is coming quite some time after the Black Panther movie has left theaters and even long after the Blu Ray release, it’ll be very interesting to see if this series gets a lot of retailer support or ends up being tough to find in brick and mortar stores.

Are you excited to see an unexpected second wave of Marvel Legends Black Panther figures, Marvel collectors? What comic-based figures are you hoping for to round out this wave, and what are your thoughts on what the Build-A-Figure could be (M’Baku, please!)?

SDCC 2018: Marvel Legends Black Panther Wave 2 Figures! Klaue! T’Chaka! — 22 Comments

  1. When I heard rumors of this, I said, the only figures they must do that I’ll 1,000 percent get are MCU Shuri MCU M’baku. I’m glad to hear that Shuri is coming out next year. PLEASE have an MCU M’baku, and please don’t have him be the build-a-figure. Then I’ll be more than likely be buying a bunch of figures I either already technically own or don’t really care about.

  2. The other Black Panther wave was/is a poor seller… They should have just sprinkled these in with the first wave – alternate heads, better BAF, more accessories…

  3. M’Baku and killmonger with the tribal mask from the musuem robbery was just announced and shown at SDCC. No word yet if M’Baku will be the BAF but he looks taller for aure than a standard figure.

  4. Ya got it wrong Dabid! This Mark’s the 1st ever “all MCU” wave. The HORRAH! Vibranium armor Panther, Erik Killmonger in his “prison breakout” gear and BAF: M’Baku with Shuri coming out next year. Droppo, unfortunately there will be no T’Chaka unmasked head (I asked).

  5. Hasbro, you want to sell that Dora Milaje mold? Pack Ayo with 2 extra random bald African woman head and make it an army builder! (like you did with Multiple Man).

That Chadwick Boseman head is great, but no, I can’t drop another $20 for a figure that I already own. I don’t display my Black Panther maskless anyway.

So now the question is what will the BAF be?!?

    • Whoops, RUKKUS just said it’s M’Baku. Well, that changes things, I might have to get the whole wave after all.

The movie might have performed better than anyone’s expectations, but the Marvel Legends Black Panther toy wave is the Marvel Legends wave that I still see sitting on shelves all the time (at least where I am). I still see a lot of Namor and Nakia.

      • I’m still seeing Blackbolt & Namor and I live in central Michigan just miles north of Kalamazoo & yup the Panther line is pretty peg warming. Series was mostly great, but you can’t Always predict any of this or the outcomes. Just wish that Klaw 2 pack had come out sooner
For a large number of the great many reasons

    • Looks like Ayo is indeed coming with 2 extra heads for army building. This wave is tough for me as I really don’t need another 3 Black Panthers but really like that M’Baku BAF.

  6. These figures are nice, but this movie sucked… Why couldn’t they do this with the good Marvel movies? Where is Korg from Ragnarok? Ghost and Michael Pena from Antman/Wasp?

  7. Is ANYBODY finding the Walgreens Silver Surfer or The Thing?!?! I look on Ebay to see where they are, and for the Surfer, there have been handfuls from the extreme East and West Coast only (and some Canada), and even scant fewer for The Thing. (Lots of listings from SE Asia as you’d expect.) What is the deal?
If Walgreens is going to do exclusives, the least they can do is offer them through their websites….

    • Silver Surfer should hit stores in 2-3 weeks. Thing is due out in October. After that it’s Super Skrull and Mystique, which hopefully get shown soon.

  8. The BP Movie did suck, and yes the figures are peg warming everywhere I go. Yes it performed well at the box office, which is good, but still, it’s not that great of a film and I have watched it twice. I’m glad I can pass on this wave like I did the first wave. Klaue(klaw) is the best figure in this set.

@samtheQ the Walgreens figs eventually show up on the website. They always do. Just show patience. With eBay you always see the overseas people selling them first. Once you see people in the US selling them, you know they are hitting stores. Usually about 2 weeks after that happens I see them pop up on the Walgreens site. Order 2 so you get free shipping, and sell off the other one. That’s what I always do and it has not failed yet. Got all the Fantastic Four set (so far less Thing), Punisher, etc.

  9. Thank you guys for the Walgreens advice; I feel better! Now back to regularly scheduled discussion…!
