Marvel Legends Apocalypse Retro Figure Up for Order!

Hasbro has begun a new tradition this year of revealing some type of Marvel Legends news on the 20th of each month, be it an all-new figure announcement or just fresh images of something we’ve previously been shown. And their June 20th sneak peek just may be the best one yet: built on the body of the rare and astronomically expensive Build-A-Figure from half a decade ago, the exclusive Marvel Legends Apocalypse Retro figure is now up for order!

Marvel Legends Apocalypse Retro Figure Packaged

Apocalypse is a popular guy, despite being a ruthless Darwinian mutant supremacist. We had two Age of Apocalypse Marvel Legends themed waves in recent years, including a deluxe solo release of En Sabah Nur himself, but that wasn’t enough to satiate all the fans out there of Big A.

The 2018 Apocalypse Build-A-Figure still sells for a soul-crushing $100+ on the aftermarket, with collectors constantly begging for a re-release. So what was Hasbro to do, besides granting fans a refreshed version of that BAF with new pieces and different deco?

Apocalypse Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure Review Hasbro

Back in 2018, I reviewed the excellent first Apocalypse BAF that headlined the wave of X-Men Legends containing Mohawk Storm. As that wave swiftly was wiped out in stores and online and prices for the Apocalypse Build-A-Figure soared on eBay, it quickly became obvious demand wasn’t going to be fully met.

An AOA Apocalypse variant from an alternate timeline didn’t fix the issue, so now Hasbro is back with a “sort-of-new” update on that figure, including a throwback color scheme we’ve never seen on an action figure before!

X-Men Animated Series fans immediately recognized this repaint as being Apocalypse in the colors seen in the X-Men 92 cartoon, which emphasized purple in addition to blue. When you look at the figure and a screenshot from the show side by side, there’s no doubt it’s a match! What an unexpected treat for X-Men TAS fans!

Furthermore, X-Men Legends Retro Apocalypse will include 3 all-new accessories: a plasma cannon switch-out arm, a plasma energy effects piece and a new “serious expression” head. The plasma cannon is also straight out of the 1992 cartoon series (see screenshot above) and sure to delight fans!

While all this X-Men 92 goodness may make it seem like this figure belongs in the Pulse exclusive lineup of toys from the show, that would be impossible since he wouldn’t fit inside the VHS box packaging those figures have. I’m glad we’re getting him this way on Toybiz vintage-styled cardback packaging rather than not at all!

Hasbro Marvel Legends Apocalypse X-Men Animated Series Retro Figure

The Retro Marvel Legends Apocalypse figure is now up for order and is expected to ship out later this year. Shipping and transportation schedules are drastically out of whack industry-wide because of the pandemic and supply issues, but hopefully we see this classic Apocalypse sooner than later. It’s all but certain to be one of Hasbro’s most popular ML releases of 2022!

What do you think of this Retro Apocalypse Legends figure, Marvel collectors? Has Hasbro done enough to make this figure feel “new” to earn your dollars, or is this new take on Apocalypse a pass for you?

  1. He’s great!
I have the BAF, so I don’t need him, but I am continually perplexed as to why we don’t have more info on the cel-shaded Mystique.

  2. It looks fantastic… Whether or not I buy it will almost completely depend on how big it is. If it’s as big as the BAF, then I’d replace mine immediately with it. If it’s not, I most likely won’t buy one unless it’s discounted for some reason. Does anyone know how tall it’s supposed to be? I haven’t seen that info anywhere yet. I’d think “6 Inch Scale” would mean it’s the same as the BAF… But that would be a very large cardback package… But, it also probably won’t be on a store peg, so.

    • This -is- the Build-A-Figure, just with new paint and accessories. The cardback will be big, just like it is for the Retro Kingpin figure in the Spider-Man series.

  3. I wasn’t able to complete the Apocalypse BAF back then, so this is a welcome surprise. Preordered, easily.
