Toy Fair: Marvel Legends X-Force Figures! Nightcrawler! Mr. Sinister!

The Vintage X-Men Marvel Legends Series I discussed yesterday wasn’t the only heavily-rumored wave of figures that Hasbro officially confirmed at the 2019 Toy Fair over the weekend: the much-speculated 2019 Marvel Legends X-Force Wave is also coming to fruition with an eclectic group of characters including Nightcrawler, Cannonball, Mr. Sinister, Boom Boom and more!

Marvel Legends X-Force Series Revealed Toy Fair 2019

When Marvel Legends rumors spread like wildfire for an extended period of time, they more often than not turn out to be true. Such is the case with the inaugural X-Force Legends series, which is coming our way in the second half of 2019.

There’s at least one more figure to be revealed in the series (in addition to presumably the Wendigo Build-A-Figure Hasbro said was in the same wave as Guardian at NYCC 2018), so stay tuned for the future reveal of the final components of this set.

Marvel Legends Nightcrawler 2019 Toy Fair Close-UpThere’s no need for debate as to who the headliner of this series will be: it’s clearly the new classic Nightcrawler figure that collectors have been demanding from Hasbro for many, many years now.

New York Toy Fair 2019 Nightcrawler Marvel Legends FigureI half-expected we’d get a grey costume Nightcrawler here to match his actual X-Force look, but I’m just as happy (maybe more) with the classic red and black costume. There’s no beard or anything crazy modern with this figure—just the iconic Kurt Wagner everyone has been asking for.

2019 NY Toy Fair Hasbro ML Nightcrawler Figure TailFor those wondering, there’s no wire bendy tail on this 2019 Marvel Legends Nightcrawler figure (the tail is too thin for that), although he does feature interchangeable hands and the tail can be swiveled.

Marvel Legends Mr. Sinister Figure X-Force Toy FairAlthough he’s being overshadowed a bit by Nightcrawler, the first 6” Mr. Sinister Legends figure in well over a decade is another critical part of this ML X-Force Series. He features a ton of newly-sculpted parts and I think his evil smile is awesome.

Toy Fair 2019 Marvel Legends X-Force Mister Sinister FigureThat said, literally the minute photos of this wave started hitting the internet, I saw folks complaining about the color choices on poor Mr. Sinister. Fans are pretty vehement about the fact that they DON’T like the black portions of Sinister’s costume, and that they think he should be all-blue instead.

I’m genuinely not familiar with this particular color scheme for Mr. Sinister, as I’ve always just assumed the black portions on this costume were shaded darker blue in comic books and not actually black. I don’t really mind the colors, but I’m sure Hasbro will do a variant or repaint of collectors make enough noise.

Toy Fair 2019 Hasbro Marvel Legends Guardian FigureThird on the list is the Alpha Flight leader, Guardian, who was announced at Fan Expo in Canada last year. I’m not sure exactly what he’s got to do with X-Force, but he’ll look lovely with the Puck and Sasquatch Figures Hasbro has previously done. (Northstar next, please?)

2019 Toy Fair Marvel Legends Boom Boom X-Force FigureThe last two figures Hasbro had on display for the X-Force Marvel Legends Series at New York Toy Fair 2019 are founding members of the original X-Force team in their original X-Force costumes: Cannonball and Boom Boom (with no effects piece!).

New York Toy Fair Boom Boom Legends Hasbro Figure Close-UpBoom Boom has been on so many teams over the years and such a long-running character that it’s almost unbelievable this is her first mass-release action figure. This is definitely the costume choice for her I’d pick, and I’m I’m excited she’ll have interchangeable heads with and without bubblegum bubbles.

Marvel Legends Cannonball Figure 2019 X-Force WaveThe new Marvel Legends Cannonball seems destined to be the most controversial figure that Hasbro premiered at Toy Fair, as he’s a little bit different from your standard ML figure… in that he has no legs.

NY Toy Fair 2019 Hasbro X-Force Legends Cannonball Action FigureWhat I heard at NY Toy Fair was that it was impossible to cost in both the legs and the huge blast effects lower body, and Hasbro picked the unique blast effects. To me, that’s the right choice and the one that will stand out the most on the shelf.

Cannonball Blast Effects Close-Up X-Force Marvel LegendsThat said, as with Mr. Sinister, perhaps we can see Cannonball with legs down the road if fans are vocal enough. Hasbro goes out of their way to make us happy whenever possible, so it’s certainly not out of the question.

New York Toy Fair Marvel Legends X-Force SeriesThe Marvel Legends X-Force Wave should be up for order online later this year, and I’ll post updates and pre-order links once we learn more about the series and when it goes up for sale. I don’t think it takes a psychic to see that Nightcrawler and Sinister are going to be two ultra-fast sell-outs in this series. There are still another 1-2 more figures left to be shown for this wave, so it can only get better and stronger!

How do you feel about the inaugural Marvel Legends X-Force series? Did Hasbro hit it out of the ballpark with this quintet, and who are you hoping rounds out the wave?

Toy Fair: Marvel Legends X-Force Figures! Nightcrawler! Mr. Sinister! — 25 Comments

  1. Nightcrawler has been my most wanted Legends figure for quite some time, so I’m really excited for him. I’d love for him to have some sort of teleporting effects piece (kinda like Blink’s), but that’s probably unlikely.

Sinister is one of my favorite X-Villains, so I’m real excited for him as well. And I don’t really mind the colors.

Boom-Boom looks great, really digging her effects piece.

    Guardian is…Guardian.

And I’m really on the fence about Cannonball. I love his “blastin’” piece, but no legs is kind of a bummer.

  2. I’m mostly glad that I don’t care for that Cannonball costume…because if that was the Cannonball version I wanted, I would be MAD that he doesn’t have legs! I get that the blasting effect is more important than legs, but it’s just so odd not to be able to display him ‘powered down’. The legs should just be cast from existing molds, right? I can’t see how they couldn’t cut something out somewhere else in order to give him both.
I also don’t see why this is being called an X-Force wave, when it includes Nightcrawler and Sinister, who are not names one usually associates with the team. (Then again, the Deadpool wave had Bishop, Omega Red and Sauron….)

    • Hasbro said his legs will be packaged with another fig. People need to really see the finished product before passing judgment. Everyone was talking crap about how blink was horrible etc but when her packaged photo came out everyone back tracked.

      • For one, Dabid stated that they said he will not have legs. Most of us aren’t at these things so we go off the reports we get. So is it confirmed he will have legs or no?

        And beyond that…

I’m angry enough just at the fact that HE doesn’t come with HIS OWN LEGS. Why the hell would they pack his legs in with another character? Is he supposed to be the BAF? Or is it just some cockamamie scheme to entice you to purchase more than one figure if you just wanted Cannonball?

The claw attachment for Apocalypse coming with the Archangel rerelease is one thing. It’s a bonus. People can easily live without that piece for their Apocalypse BAF.

It’s entirely different to pass off half a figure and stuff the rest of him elsewhere.

        • It wasn’t said during the Hasbro Presentation that he would have legs, and I heard it said in the showroom that they couldn’t afford both legs and the blast effect. If it was somehow confirmed elsewhere that there will be Cannonball legs, I didn’t hear it and I can’t find any source confirming so.

          • Check out ShartimusPrime’s Toyfair coverage video. In it you can see the two head Marvel Legends guys talking about Cannonball, and mentioning that they couldn’t afford to do both legs and blast effect, so they went with the blast effect only.

  3. I see why they would go with the effects piece on Cannonball if they could only do one or the other, but look what that leaves us! What else can you do with this figure other than what it’s doing in these photos? Turn his head a little to one side or the other? It might as well have been a solid statue. It’s barely an action figure at all. Total fail. You can’t figure out yet how to do it right? Just wait until you can! Sell it like a vehicle figure or like Archangel or Prof X in a larger box with extra accessories to lure people in. Alternate heads, hands, both effects piece and legs. This Cannonball is 90 percent pointless.

    • During the Hasbro Media Presentation, Guardian was the first figure they listed off when discussing the X-Force series, and then afterwards he was displayed on the shelf with this series in the showroom. There’s no reason to think he’s not part of the X-Force series.

  4. Again, this cost issue excuse BS has got to stop. No one buys it.

The tail on Nightcrawler is not “too thin” for a bendy wire. I’ve owned other figures with more narrow rubber tail/tentacles/tubes that they got a bendy wire into. I don’t think they were using forbidden dark arts or ritual human sacrifice to make it happen.

Hasbro doesn’t want to pay for it. Plain and simple. Everything they leave out increases their bottom-line.

Since no one liked my Lieutenant Dannonball joke, I’m going to keep pushing until it sticks.
His lower body is one solid piece of plastic. I do not accept that it would’ve cost too much to make a separate effects piece and pack him without a BAF part. That is utter hogwash. He is half a figure and they will sell him for MSRP and laugh their way to the bank. You are right, though, that they will probably re-release him. Most likely a two-pack with Warpath so everyone bends to pay 40 bucks for Warpath – justifying that cost since they are FINALLY getting a walking Sam Guthrie with it – even though it would mean no new tooling or any effort on Hasbro’s part for the second figure. It’s the GIJOE game – repaints, repaints, and more repaints and some gimmicky way to force your hand to buy them again and again.

If you do paint variants, don’t make them integral to completing teams or BAFs or packed in with new figures you can’t get elsewhere. **COUGH COUGH LOKI/CORVUS GLAIVE COUGH COUGH**

Considering Hydroman was revealed, I feel the need to point out that back in the ToyBiz 5″ days we got a Hydroman that had legs AND an effects piece that he fit into to look like water from the waist down. It worked well and looked cool as heck.

You are telling me they couldn’t have done the same thing for both Hydroman and Cannonball here? Saved money by using the same hollowed out piece mold for two figures in the same year? One blue, one red. Done. They certainly could’ve. This was cheaper or they are idiots.

Boom Boom and Jubilee came to kick ass and chew bubblegum and Hasbro supplied the bubblegum.

But, frankly, Roddy Piper is dead, and I’d have prefered a prehensile tail and the second half of Cannonball.

    • I think its more of a child safety issue because Hasbro is primarily a kids toys company vs Neca is a collector focused company. Hasbro’s safety standards is probably higher cuz it’d be nightmare for them if a wire poked through the plastic and poked a kids eye out.

      • I’d potentially accept that rationale over the cost excuse but let’s not forget they are doing the bendy wire for Scorpion. Wouldn’t the danger be equal? If they can release one figure with it, I doubt it amounts to a safety concern. I think there have been just as “dangerous” pieces in the past. I mean you could easily poke out an eye with Monster Venom’s fingers. Hell, on a rare occasion I’ve cut my own hands on the plastic blister packaging each figure comes in. And man, those hurt worse than a paper-cut.

I’d argue that these aren’t aimed for super young kids to begin with. Hasbro actively has safer simpler Marvel toys that are for the younger age group. That said, I have been collecting action figures since childhood and my dad taught me to handle them with some care. Sure, some broke, some parts got lost. But I never hurt myself with them and I never swallowed little parts that came with them back in those days. I would defend Hasbro and any other company over the modern idea that parents are not accountable to supervise their own children. But that’s a whole other can of worms.

My issue is the blatant sleight of hand Hasbro pulls. Don’t lie to the adult community and say you are incapable of doing something when you are actively cutting it out to save on production cost. And don’t try to claim that relatively cheap inclusions (like a separate hollow blast effect) would price-out a figure.

It’s insulting because the vast majority of people paying attention to these press events are not kids who are too young to know not to poke their eyes out with a metal wire.

Ideally I’d like to believe your theory and hope that the ML Hasbro execs aren’t willing to take advantage of their base. But, for all the good they do, they still are a business and still want to sell you as little as possible for as much profit as they can get. That’s just profitability and while I don’t condemn them for being a business, I think it’s on us as collectors and consumers to praise the good but also call out the bullsh*t.

    • Can’t disagree with your points man. I find it really odd they chose to go with the blast option as his lower half when they could’ve used a snap on effect or something similar. I don’t doubt Ol’ Sam will get re-released in a two pack like you said, and if it is w/ Warpath Goddamn I hope it’s his classic look rather than a straight up repaint, which it probably will be. We’ll see.
I’m pleasantly surprised by Hydro-man being an all-new sculpt rather than the Sandman BAF buck reuse I thought he’d be. So at least they did that right.
Fair point on the lack of bendy tail for Kurt. Why he wouldn’t have one when it’s an integral part of his overall design must be due to cost-cutting yet Toy Biz didn’t have that problem back when they made him, so Hasbro shouldn’t have had an issue with it either.

      • Yeah, I hope no one misunderstands – I love Marvel Legends. I just find some decisions they make odd and I don’t like when they don’t admit to certain short-comings. Ultimately, I’m pleased with a lot of the reveals, but I know for a fact they are making money off this line. They reuse molds, they do repaints, the MCU carries a lot of popularity. So idk, I just don’t like when good options get left out for further cost cutting especially when I feel like they aren’t being honest with their reasoning.

  5. Nightcrawler is a must-buy for me but honestly I’m digging how all these figures look. Would’ve preferred that Sam come with both legs + effect but if I have to choose I go with blast and I’m guessing your average kid would prefer that choice too. Seems strange that before it was implied guardian was in the wendigo BAF wave but that didn’t seem to be referenced at ToyFair.

I assume one of the remaining figs is wolverine … elsewhere someone pointed out that nightcrawler, guardian, wolverine and wendigo are all in Uncanny X-men 140, along with snowbird. It would be cool if she was in the wave too!

  6. I’d like Hasbro to come up with another blast effect piece that can be attached on top of the Cannonball blast effect piece (assuming the torso is detachable). This additional blast effect piece would be designed so that an action figure’s feet can be fitted into the piece. It could be an accessory piece if and when Hasbro comes out with a Nova action figure. It could also be used with the Torch (or any other action figure deemed appropriate).

  7. Nightcrawler makes me SO HAPPY I could cry! He looks SO AMAZING!!! He’s exactly what and how I wanted him to me made. I can honestly see myself buying multiples because of how much I love Nightcrawler and this figure.
    ❤💙❤

Sinister is the other must have for me. I don’t see the problem with the Black color details. Yeah sure it could have been done all blue, but this adds more detail and appeal in my eyes.

    I CAN’T WAIT!

  8. Man, Nightcrawler looks REALLY good. He is without a doubt my favorite X-Men character so it’s great that they’re releasing him. I’m not quite sure, but I’ll probably get him even though I have the Diamond Select version of him. And David, can you PLEASE make a best Marvel Legends reveals of Toy Fair for this year like you did last year?

    • I really wish they would have made her with the Hydra Supreme Leader Captain America instead of Zola.

  9. This wave is such a waste…. stop making figure when the original is better… why do I feel like I’m the only one who wants new releases night crawler was a horrible toy biz figure so cool I’ll take this one. But mr sinister is not needed to be redone.. just like omega red the original crushes the new one releasesd. How is it we have remake after remake 4 Emma Frost and not one other member of the hellfire club.. Shaw is such a top ten villain.. guardian… what a joke as well just like that Union Jack they literally are the same as the toy biz version…. wasted opportunity. Make northsrar, maverick, ahab nimrod master mold not redo redo redo give me hellfire club master mind holy cow… no Shaw but skullcrusher yep that makes sense
