Funko Retires 3 Marvel POP Vinyls! Cyclops! Professor X!

Seeing as how Funko releases eleventy-billion new POP Vinyls figures each year, sometimes old favorites have to go to that big toy factory in the sky. And this week, three Funko Marvel POP Vinyls met their makers! Though they’re still available online for below retail price (for now!), Funko Cyclops and Professor X have now joined Director Coulson and Lola the Flying Car in retirement…

Funko Cyclops POP Vinyls Figure

I was taken totally off-guard yesterday when I learned that the POP Rides Lola and Director Coulson set had been “vaulted” (that’s fancy Funko-speak for “retired”) after only having been released for half a year.

But it looks like Phil and his beloved flying car aren’t going to have to fly off into the sunset all alone–they’re going to be joined by several of the X-Men POP Vinyls that hit stores at the start of 2015!

Earlier this spring, the Funko Mystique POP Vinyls figure was quietly vaulted. As soon as that happened, I got suspicious of when the rest of the X-Men POPs from that wave (Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Magneto and Professor X) would be joining her.

While in the Vault, no additional runs of these figures will be done–and no Funko Marvel POPs have ever come out of the Vault. So if you want to have the most famous leaders of the X-Men in your POP Vinyl collection for non-insane aftermarket prices, now is the time to act for the best value.

For comparison’s sake, you could get the Phoenix and Doctor Doom POP Vinyls for under 10 bucks each when I announced their retirement way back in July 2014.

Both of those figures sell for around $90 each now (with their variants selling for $150 and up), so kudos to the folks who were smart enough to buy up Dr. Doom and Phoenix while they were still cheap.

While nothing has been made official yet, I’ve heard from insider sources that the Funko Colossus POP Vinyls figure will be retiring in the very near future as well. Looks like Storm and Magneto will be the sole survivors of this wave once that happens!

Mystique Funko POP Vinyls Figure Retired VaultedThe Funko X-Men Cyclops, Professor X and Mystique POP Vinyls are all still available online for below their retail prices, but with no additional quantities of these figures being produced, it’s only a short amount of time until all three sell out and their prices begin to skyrocket on the aftermarket. If you’re an X-Men collector and think you may ever want these characters, they’ll never be cheaper than they are right now.

What are your thoughts on the latest Marvel Funko POPs to be vaulted? Is this a sign of Marvel pushing for less X-Men toys to be produced, or do you think Cyclops and Professor Xavier are just poor sellers? What characters do you expect to see retired next?

    • The variant of Cyclops was a European exclusive. For the longest time you couldn’t find one for under 50. Recently on eBay there were a couple sellers who listed a few for 25. If you were interested in one i’d say jump on it.

Cyclops is my favorite marvel hero ever, so I naturally had to have both. Honestly I prefer the Unmasked Cyclops. I love the little red eyes on Scott. Totally a worthwhile Pop.
