Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3! Hulkbuster Build-A-Figure!

Remember when computer listings appeared for a mysterious wave of Marvel Legends figures that some speculated would be a Barnes and Noble exclusive, and I asserted that that would be utterly ridiculous? Yeah–I was right. Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3, as I thought, is another mass-release Marvel Legends 2015 figures set. But you know what’s even better than me being right…? If you said “a giant 9″ tall Hulkbuster Iron Man Build-A-Figure”, you’re right!

If there’s one figure that Marvel Legends collectors have been absolutely demanding from Hasbro for the Marvel Legends Avengers 2015 series, it’s the movie version of Hulkbuster Iron Man. And though we weren’t certain it would happen, it has: at the New York Toy Fair 2015 today, Hasbro debuted their Marvel Legends Hulkbuster Iron Man Build-A-Figure!

While he’s not technically to scale with the other Avengers Age of Ultron Marvel Legends figures (Titan Tech Hulkbuster Iron Man is actually a better match), the massive 9″ Hulkbuster Iron Man is a monster compared to every other Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure we’ve gotten in recent years.

Of course, if you want to build the Hulkbuster Iron Man Marvel Legends figure, you’ll have to buy seven other Marvel Legends figures to get him! First up is the new Marvel Legends 2015 Dr. Strange figure.

I imagine many collectors will be irate that Hasbro opted for the Marvel NOW! Doctor Strange costume, but the original Toybiz Doctor Strange Marvel Legends figure still holds up today, so I can live with this choice.

Next up we’ve got two long-lost Marvel Legends figures that Hasbro showed off in 2013-2014 and then pushed back: Blizzard and Valkyrie! Both these figures are long overdue, in my opinion, and Blizzard holds a special place in my heart for his role in the 90’s Iron Man cartoon. I’m thrilled we’re finally getting these.

Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3 Vision FigureMarvel Legends 2015 Avengers Wave 3 Vision 6″ Figure

Like Doctor Strange, I imagine plenty of fans are going to be miffed over this Marvel NOW! Vision Marvel Legends figure. Like Doctor Strange, though, I’m not sure that Hasbro could really improve on the Toybiz Marvel Legends Vision figure. The shiny metallic paint on this Vision figure looks sensational, and I think a lot of fans are going to really warm up to it when they see it in person.

Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3 War Machine FigureAvengers Marvel Legends War Machine Figure

I believe this is just the War Machine figure that was cancelled from 2013’s Marvel Legends Iron Man 3 Wave 3, but that’s A-OK with me. I really love this version of the War Machine armor, and War Machine is always a solid seller. Good choice.

Thundra Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3 Figure

Finally, we come to the figures most likely to be passed on if they didn’t contain Build-A-Figure parts: Marvel Legends Thundra and Marvel Now Iron Man.

I think it’s rather bizarre that we’re getting a Thundra Marvel Legends figure when we never got the previously-cancelled figure of her daughter, Lyra, but evidently Hasbro thinks Thundra will sell better. I somehow doubt that, and I could definitely see this figure rotting on shelves if it wasn’t necessary to build the Hulkbuster BAF.

Not everyone is in love with the black-and-gold Iron Man Marvel NOW! armor, but I think it’s a nice contrast to the constant flood of red and gold Iron Men. This is a winner (at least, to me).

Marvel Legends Marvel Now Iron Man FigureI’ll be continuing to post news and photos from New York Toy Fair 2015 all week long, so be sure to ‘Like’ Marvel Toy News on Facebook if you want articles sent right to your Facebook Newsfeed.

What do you think of the Avengers Marvel Legends Wave 3 series, Marvel collectors? Are you ‘in’ for the seven-figure, $140 commitment it’ll take to build Hulkbuster Iron Man, or does this Marvel Legends 2015 series fail to capture your love (and dollars)?

Marvel Legends Avengers Wave 3! Hulkbuster Build-A-Figure! — 30 Comments

  1. There are very nice looking figures ! Blizzard , Python Ironman , Dr.Strange , Vision , all of them are very cool !

  2. good thing i dont want hulkbuster. he seems too toy-ish. so im just gonna pick up strange/vision from this line. and get the iron man when he’s steeply discounted.

but imma pick up that entire antman wave though and sell off shark and bulldozer.

they’re pumping these figures out crazy this year. im pretty fckn shocked.

    • “Toy-ish”?
Wth? Is this some sorta ironic-hipster talk that I don’t get?
These ARE toys. Is this anything like when one says “I am going to the Store store?”Or “She’s not my Girlfriend girlfriend.”
Yeah. Whatever. You’re an Ultron fan. Cool.
As for the mass of oncoming product: it was unavoidable and a long time coming.

      • I’m pretty sure he’s referring to the plastic’s look. Usually when metal is represented on a collectible figure, a wash/dry-brush is used to make the metal look less plastic and more real. Hasbro typically doesn’t do this, and while their metallics are strong on their own, the lack of paint detail makes the figure look “toyish”.

        • arty explained it very well. It even gose further hasbro makes shitty toys, the paint job is ugly and the details are inexistant. But these are toys i bet they are sturdy and the ugly looking paint doesnt come off if you scratch it. That is what’s expected from a kid toy but we could exept a little more effort on the paint job with such a price tag. I mean blizzard and vision have almost identical shapes and dr strange also has the same legs ! I that’s not lazy then what is ?

  3. I read up on Thundra, since I’d never hear of her (not big on FF stuff, aside from my love of Thing), but I think her story is pretty cool, even if I didn’t need the BAF piece, I’d pick her up.

  5. I’m satisfied with the Valkyrie TRU exclusive that was packaged with Hulk a few years back. Rather than two Valkyries in six years, how about a comic-version Sif?

    • That Valkyrie is super-expensive on the secondary market and was only released as an exclusive, though–and was also a classic Valkyrie. This is a modern version for mass release.

Don’t worry–if we’re getting characters like Misty Knight now, I feel like there’s a real chance Hasbro will get to Lady Sif in the next year or two.

      • Thanks for the info,Dabid. Glad I bought Classic Valkryie when I saw it all those years ago.
Buying this one too-Love the Defenders and Lady Liberators!!

BTW:Has Misty Knight now become the Standard of what is possible in Marvel Legends?!
        I LOVE IT!!!

      • I think Enchantress is needed before Sif, never mind Heimdall or the warriors 3. Definitely waiting for a Walt Simonson Thor in full armour…

  6. My main focus on this wave is DR. Strange, The Vision, and War Machine (since i missed out on getting him last time). Everyone else is still in debate

  7. We need more movie series figures enough with the comic book legends!I hate these waves it mostly contains comic book legends also where’s quicksilver and scarlet witch from the movie we need them not their comic book versions!we need to demand more movie series figures no more comic serieswhere nnow in the Marvel cinematic universe we need movie series figures not comic book series.

  8. I already have a better War Machine. I have zero interest in Blizzard, Valkyrie and Thundra. Dr. Strange and Iron Man are interesting but I won’t go out of my way to get them at $20+. Vision and the Hulk-Buster are the only can’t miss figures in this wave imo. It looks like I’ll be missing out on this Hulk-Buster, bummer.

  9. Wave 3 breakdowns include 1 of everything except War Machine (2) . Wave 2 breaks down to 2 Iron Man, 2 Hulk and 1 of everything else. The Iron Man pattern continues. And that is an observation, not a complaint.

  10. Creo que ironman marvel now y el hulkbuster era necesario pero ya esta!! Ya no mas ironmans por favor

  11. Definetly getting blizzard. The metallic shiny blue paint that they use just looks amazing.

  12. The Marvel Legends are flowing!! I love that this line is picking up steam and is combines movie and comic versions of my favorite characters!! Thank you Hasbro!

  13. Thundra is the figure I want most! People think Squirrel Girl is random, but Thundra is the real Queen of the Marvel obscure, she’s bounce around from comic to comic and has met up with nearly everyone and no ones noticed. It’s awesome and it’s cool were getting taller female chararcters!

I missed Doctor Strange and Valkyrie first time round so I’m happy to have them, also, happy to get replacements for my current War Machine and Vision. Blizzard would be a welcome addition to my rogues gallery.

Only gripe is Iron Man’s colours, they’re bit off-putting and also considering the amount of figures Tony Stark gets it’s a bit annoying to see.

  14. When are all these Avengers age of ultron action figures going to be released because the film is out and I want the Action Figures!!!!

  15. When you say Thundra is a peg warmer, you mean after the scalpers buy up all the initial ones for ebay, right? Just like all the girl figures. Us pervvy adults like the woman characters. Marvel bitches that girl figures dont sell then they make 2 per wave.. ?!?

    • I said Thundra would pegwarm if she didn’t contain a Hulkbuster piece, and I stand by it. She may be a great character, but as far as name recognition goes, she’s a D-List character. Definitely one of the most obscure females Hasbro has ever tackled for Marvel Legends.
