Marvel Legends Defenders & Hydra Troopers Box Sets! SDCC

While the majority of the items that Hasbro brought along to officially reveal at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 were unofficially known already due to a widely-circulated leaked list, Hasbro still had some surprises to knock our socks off with. And the two that really threw me for a loop are (of course) store exclusives: the Marvel Legends Defenders box set and Marvel Legends Hydra Troopers army-builder two-pack!

Marvel Legenda Defenders Box Set Amazon Exclusive

A lot of collectors have been pretty grumpy about the fact that a modern comic-based Marvel Legends Luke Cage figure in yellow shirt hasn’t been available for under 100 bucks due to that figure only having been available in the SDCC 2013 Exclusives Thunderbolts box set. That is–up until now.

Following up the highly-anticipated reemergence of the Ares Build-A-Figure (as a non-BAF) in the Thor Ragnarok Legends series, collectors are getting a new shot at another of the holy grails of ML collecting: Luke Cage!

The Amazon Exclusive Marvel Legends Defenders 4-Pack will contain the following four comic-based (although obviously being promoted to coincide with the Netflix Defenders series) figures:

  • Luke Cage
  • Jewel (Jessica Jones in costume)
  • Iron Fist (New paint scheme–shirtless)
  • Daredevil (Repaint)

This is the first time that a super-articulated figure of Jewel has been made by any company, and there’s also still a huge demand for a comic book-based red Daredevil figure (despite one being released two years ago).

Toys R Us Exclusive Marvel Legends Hydra Troopers Two PackMeanwhile, Toys R Us is going to be getting a two-pack that’s likely to sell like gangbusters: the Marvel Legends Hydra Troopers pack! This is the first troop builder pack that Hasbro has released in a long, long time.

These figures use tooling from the Nuke mold and the previously-released Winter Soldier series Hydra Trooper figure. Each figure comes with three heads, and unless I heard wrong during the SDCC 2017 Hasbro Marvel panel, it certainly sounded like the Hasbro team was hinting that one of the heads might be a “Bob, Agent of Hydra” head (which I would seriously lose my mind over).

I actually think I would have preferred two of the standard-sized Hydra Soldier figures to having one of these figures be on the heavyweight Nuke body, but I suppose it’s always good to have variety. What do you think, Marvel Legends collectors?

SDCC 2017 Marvel Legends Defenders 4-Pack RevealedThe Marvel Legends Defenders Box Set is scheduled to be go up for order on Amazon before the end of 2017, although Hasbro couldn’t give any specific release info on exactly when this major release will be ready to drop. The price wasn’t announced either, but I’d be shocked if this isn’t the usual $79.99 for four figures price-point. No word yet on when the ML Hydra Soldiers set will be available at Toys R Us.

Are you psyched up about either of these upcoming box sets, Marvel collectors? How many packs of Hydra Troopers are you interested in army-building (if any), and are you pleased about the contents of the Defenders 4-pack?

  1. So big HYDRA trooper is Nuke with a Captain Britain helmet?
    Weird.

Looks like we get the Chameleon laser rifle, Drax missile launcher, and Warpath knife…
I wonder what else. They said this set included a whole bunch of other weapons, right?

I hope they do a new MODOK and Scientist Supreme, and a new AIM soldier 2-pack to go with them.

Hell, maybe they can do a new Dum Dum Dugan, Maria Hill, and Daisy Johnson, and then we need a SHIELD Agent 2-pack to build up a SHIELD force.

Honestly, I come from a wargaming and game design background. Armybuilder sets makes me almost want to design a Marvel Legends wargame ruleset.
Having squads of SHIELD, AIM, HYDRA, Hand, Kree, Skrulls, Doombots, etc etc, lead by heroes and villains…. That’d be an AWESOME basis for a wargame.

  2. I too would prefer a Hydra/AIM soldier two-part for army-building; I don’t think I would need more than one of those Nuke-sized Hydra goons. As it is I’d probably grab one pack, but it were a Hydra/AIM pack? I would go crazy!

    • Since there are so many heads and so much interchangeable gear, you can do a whole bunch of different large HYDRA troops.
(Not sure if all 6 heads fit both bodies or if it’s just 3 heads for each body.)

  3. A little bummed that Luke is in yet another exclusive set. Hopefully this one wont be as difficult to get.

    • Watch the site and our social media. As soon as this set goes live, I’ll let everybody know. I THINK Amazon will have ordered plenty, but if not, readers will know it’s live and available for order within minutes. 🙂

  4. Unbelievably excited for another chance to get daredevil! Looks even better than the last too

  5. I’m excited and frustrated. Glad they are doing the sets – just personally mad that I recently acquired the Luke Cage from the old SDCC set at a big price hike just to have a modern comic version for my collection. Conversely I’m glad I didn’t get the Thanos Imperative set. Both Blackbolt and Medusa coming out in their more iconic costumes as regular releases sits just fine with me. I may purchase one of the Hydra two packs but as I’ve already accumulated a few of the winter soldier singles I feel extremely uninterested in getting multiples.

  6. The large Hydra goon is just perfect. I have a good number of the newer Hydra (not the Brood Queen series) goons to go with Zemo and M.O.D.O.K. so the reissue of a two-pack with the same guy would not have been exciting. Even though I already built an army, I’ll still be getting 2-3 of these packs to add to the ranks. Extra heads are always welcome.

  7. Hope that Jewel/Jessica Jones will be avaible in a Avengers wave in 2018. The set is a great opportunity to have four great figures, but I already have the male Defenders, so… some of us only need Jessica Jones.
