SDCC 2018 Exclusive Marvel Legends Netflix Defenders Set!

Believe it or not, San Diego Comic Con 2018 begins in under one month! Even so, we hadn’t heard am official peep regarding this year’s Hasbro Marvel Legends exclusives. At least—not until today! After accidentally leaking the set last week, this morning the Hollywood Reporter posted the first official look at the Marvel Legends Netflix Defenders Box Set including the first Netflix Colleen Wing and Iron Fist figures!

I was holding off on posting about this set after the initial photo came out last week, hoping that more details would be forthcoming shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, that tweet from The Hollywood Reporter was the sum totality of what we knew about this set up until today, so I apologize for those who came here looking to hear me discuss this set previously and had to wait.

But now that the set has finally been officially announced, I can post my impressions with a clear conscience! And personally, I think Hasbro is getting a sort of bad rap with all the negativity I’ve been seeing spread about this Netflix Defenders SDCC Box Set.

SDCC 2018 Exclusive Marvel Legends Defenders Figures Set Box Subway CarThe various Netflix Series are all monumentally popular with a larger audience than collect Marvel Legends figures normally, so having a con exclusive box set to lure in potential now collectors from the 130,000+ SDCC attendees makes excellent sense to me. San Diego Comic Con is probably the single best place to launch a set of this nature, in my opinion.

While technically there are only two new characters in this set, there’s at least something new about every 6” figure included. Here’s my thoughts on the quintet…

Marvel Legends Defenders SDCC 2018 Figures Box Set ExclusiveNetflix Daredevil (Unmasked): While this figure otherwise looks like a 100% repack, it does feature one new bonus that fans were asking for: a Charlie Cox portrait Matt Murdock head. The head isn’t exactly a spitting-image likeness, but it’s the closest we’ve seen to Charlie Cox thus far from any company out there.

Jacketless Jessica Jones: The big difference between this and last year’s Marvel Knights Jessica Jones is that this time out, she’s got no leather jacket and different arms. You couldn’t just cut the jacket off the last figure since her arms were sculpted with sleeves, so I have no issue with this retool. Some people probably prefer Jessica with her jacket off—this makes sense as far as variants go.

Red Shirt Luke Cage: This is the figure in the set I’m least enamored with. While many fans have been hoping for a bullet-ridden hoodie version of Netflix Luke Cage, this is just the upcoming two-pack figure with a red shirt instead of yellow. I haven’t heard loud cries for a red shirt variant of Luke Cage, so I’m not sure that this repaint is going to be high on many peoples’ lists.

Colleen Wing: The first-ever Hasbro Marvel Legends Colleen Wing figure of any kind! I legitimately was not expecting a Colleen Wing action figure, but with Marvel Legends Claire Temple coming up, I suppose Colleen Wing shouldn’t be a surprise. This is almost unquestionably the most enticing figure in the whole SDCC 2018 Marvel Legends set, and looks like a ton of fun overall. Love it.

Iron Fist: Last but certainly not least, it’s the first Marvel Legends Netflix Iron Fist Figure. This weird hobo-looking Iron Fist is not the look for the character that I would have picked at all, but it is authentic to the Netflix series. Fans have been demanding Iron Fist, so it’s nice to know that we’ll be getting at least this one version from Hasbro.

For those who just want a Netflix Legends Iron Fist to complete their team: don’t panic. I think it’s extremely unlikely we won’t see a 6” Iron Fist Netflix figure released outside of this set, likely in a two-pack like the Luke Cage/Claire Temple set.

Marvel Legends SDCC 2018 Exclusive Box Set DefendersThe Marvel Legends Defenders Rail Authority Pack set will retail for $124.99 and be available in an awesome MTA Railcar box at San Diego Comic-Con 2018 next month. I’m not at all wild about that price for a set with three characters that are only mild refreshes, but hey–that is a pretty cool Subway Car box, right?

Will we ever see the Vince D’Onofrio Kingpin Marvel Legends figure that fans have been asking for? That’s one we’ll have to wait and see on.

What do you think of this year’s first-unveiled Marvel Legends exclusive set, Marvel collectors? Do you like the idea of the whole Netflix Defenders Legends set being available all in one place, or is this box set a hard pass for your collection?

SDCC 2018 Exclusive Marvel Legends Netflix Defenders Set! — 24 Comments

  1. I certainly have no problem with it, but I don’t need it either. I imagine we’ll get an Iron Fist and Colleen Wing two-pack eventually, so I’m not suffering from FOMO on this one or anything. Easy pass.

  2. meh… I’d rather have some more comic book characters not more MCU. I do want an iron-fist (even though that was the first MCU thing that I truly disliked), but for completion sake. And I like the Colleen Wing fig, that’s cool. But other than that, i’d much prefer comic figs.

  3. It’s good for an exclusive. If you want it you’ll try n get it but if not it’s not critical to your collection. I’ll probably see if I can get lucky and get it online when it gives up in Hasbrotoyshop.com after the con.

  4. Kit bash repaint. This will be the first SDCC set iam not buying if they really wanted to tap into that massive crowd why not put some effort like maybe a new Kingpin an it may have flown of shelves. Are people going to wait in line for 3 days for this. Good luck to those who think they can flip this to make a quick back.

  5. Lol who is gonna pay $125 for three repaints, a homeless iron fist, and one decent figure?

    • Why does everyone keep calling him homeless Iron Fist, when this is blatantly billionaire CEO Iron Fist wearing his suit and shiny white sneakers?

Homeless Iron fist had a hippy shirt, a bathrobe, and bare feet. Frankly I would’ve preferred homless Iron Fist. He was much more….monk-like.

      • Yeah agreed. This should be dubbed the Hipster Gates-Zuckerberg Danny Rand version of Iron Fist.

  6. Maybe it’s just me but would prefer Matt Murdock in his suit with the glass with the Kingpin than get a rehash with a new head.

    • I don’t believe Hasbro US has officially announced it yet, but Netflix Luke Cage & Claire Temple has already appeared on eBay at exorbitant prices after being released internationally: http://bit.ly/MLClaireLukeCage

That’s the only other new Netflix Legends item to speak of right now.

  7. “The various Netflix Series are all monumentally popular with a larger audience than collect Marvel Legends figures normally”

    Oh…man….I think that’s demonstrably untrue.
Shelves are cluttered with pegwarming Daredevils, Elektras, Punishers, and Jessica Joneses.
And that’s with Jessica Jones figure is one of the best looking Marvel Legends figures ever made, Elektra having what are maybe the two best heads in all of Marvel Legends, and Daredevil looking way more awesome than he actually is while he’s in the packaging.
Even on Amazon you can get all those figures for right at or barely above MSRP, except Jessica Jones, who’s $10 more.

    • To clarify, I mean there’s a large contingent of fans of the Netflix shows who DON’T usually collect Marvel Legends. Casual fans who Hasbro may be able to tap into at SDCC who wouldn’t normally shop in the toy aisle. Maybe the set will flop—but I think it’s an interesting try nonetheless!

      • I think it’s fine. It’s exactly the right sort of niche thing to be a con exclusive. Not uber desirable, so a million people aren’t going to be pissed off when they can’t get one, but weird and specific enough to be interesting.

If they had put black proto-suit Daredevil and bullet-ridden hoodie Luke Cage in the set, it’d be a must-have. It’s pretty bizarre that they didn’t.

Even a better Season 2-style Daredevil masked head would’ve helped make this more desirable than a reuse of the Season 1 head.

        • If I were Hasbro, I would’ve waited to make Iron Fist until he gets his costume in the second season.

          • Are you sure he’s ever going to get his costume? They really don’t seem to like putting costumes on superheroes these days. It’s all just dark leather military style gear. Daredevil’s version of a costume looks like military gear more than a costume too. Painting it red and giving him horns on his helmet are the things that remind us that he’s actually Daredevil from the comic books. And Cage and Jones are just running around in their civilian outfits. I keep wondering why they want to make these movies and shows if they are so against having the characters actually look like the characters.

          • Iron Fist is absolutely getting a costume. They said they were waiting for him to get his costume before doing a figure, so I guess they meant a standalone figure.
Iron Fist already started to move towards a costume at the end of Defenders, after meeting Daredevil, and they initially said he wouldn’t get it until like season 3, but have more recently been hinting he’d get it in season 2.

  8. WAIT A SECOND. Are the subway seats actually 3D??? If it is, that’s reason enough to get this pack. But I don’t wanna get my hopes up.

  9. And so there it is. The last bastion of Marvel Legends comic based figures has been extinguished. We can’t escape it even at Comic-Con. The “Actors in Cosplay” lovers win out again.

  10. So speaking of Defenders, apparently GameStop/Diamond Select has a whole line of Defenders statues that I hadn’t heard of until actually spotting them in store, and they look amazing. WAAAYYYY better than the standing on rooftop ones they had before. Just wanted to throw that out there in case anybody else was in the dark like myself.

  11. Hopefully with the Everett Ross figure coming out hopefully soon, they’ll use his body for Matt in his civilian/lawyer clothing. And for the love of all things Holy, we need Kingpin!

  12. I would’ve preferred a Black Order Comic Con exclusive to capitalize on Infinity War.
