Marvel Legends X-Men Maggott REVIEW & Photos 2022 Bonebreaker BAF Series

There have historically been few—if any—full-on members of the main X-Men team that have done less of note than poor Maggott. In fact, Toybiz even revealed a prototype Maggott X-Men action figure in the mid 90s and then quietly scrapped plans to ever produce a toy of the character at all. But two and a half decades later, ol’ Japheth’s time has finally come—is the X-Men Marvel Legends Maggott figure the definitive one-and-done version of the character it needs to be?

X-Men Marvel Legends Maggott Figure Review

The South African mutant Maggott was created at the tail-end of Scott Lindell’s X-Men run in 1997, with the character fully joining the X-Men in Joe Kelly’s X-Men #70 a few months later (the same issue Marrow and Dr. Cecilia Reyes officially joined the team).

During his short tenure on the X-Men, we learned that Maggott’s mutant power consists of his digestive system existing as two giant Maggott-like “insect” creatures that need to burrow in and out of him to feed and then provide Japheth was sustenance. Like most quirky and ridiculous characters, I instantly took a liking to Maggott.

Shockingly, this unique power set did not catch on, and Maggott was quickly ushered into the Generation X squad for one issue and then written out until the character would be randomly killed a few years later. He’s since been resurrected, but appeared sparsely and done basically nothing.

As you might expect, I’d given up on ever getting an actual Maggott action figure. But Hasbro’s Marvel design team had not! And so, the seventh and final individual figure I’ll be reviewing in the X-Men Legends Bonebreaker series is the first, last, and sure to be only-ever Marvel Legends Maggott Figure!

I was outright stunned when Hasbro announced this Maggott Legends figure last year, and I’m still a little astonished that he’s real even now that I have him in-hand. This has got to be among the most unlikely mutants Hasbro has ever produced. Luckily, his six inch figure turned out pretty swell.

Hasbro Maggott Figure and Accessories X-Men

Let me skip ahead a little bit to the area Hasbro has been most lacking: accessories. In Maggott’s case, the inclusion of the two slugs that are his mutant power—Eanie and Meanie—is absolutely crucial. And thankfully, Hasbro has come through here with a wonderful success.

The slugs are made of a slightly flexible plastic and each has a unique sculpt and nicely-applied paint deco. One fits perfectly over Maggott’s shoulders, while the other curls lovingly on his arms. They stay attached stably enough, and the visual is unlike anything else in my Marvel Legends collection. As you may have surmised, I straight-up love these.

Independently, the Maggott Legends figure is pretty hot stuff, too. His skin is a unique bright blue color, and I love his tuft of white hair and the piercing pupils inside of his red eyes. Maggott’s toothy grin is also charmingly creepy, making the toy feel full of personality.

Like all super-articulated figures wearing a long coat, Maggott’s ranges of motion are somewhat inhibited. Luckily, this is a rare character where that’s not a big issue, as the character essentially has no memorable scenes or fights to recreate anyway—just standing around with the slugs hanging on him is all most collectors will ever want from X-Men Legends Maggott.

His complete articulation scheme consists of:

  • Ball-Hinge Neck and Shoulders
  • Ball Hips
  • Double-Hinge Knees and Elbows
  • Swivel Waists, Biceps, Thighs and Boots
  • Swivel-Hinge Wrists

The double-jointed knees are the old pinned style, and while I obviously would have preferred pin-less, it’s rare Maggott will be posed with the sides of his legs not obscured by his jacket, so I think he can get away with this.

Overall: I’m not sure I can remove all bias from my judgment in this instance, but I think this Marvel Legends Maggott figure is pretty great. He comes with the all-important slugs, which fit on him perfectly and stably. The quality control is on-point, Maggott’s colors really pop in a lineup, and the head sculpt and hair look really fun. Pin-less knees and some shades would have been neat improvements, but even without this Maggott gets my seal of approval. Any fan of this character should scoop this well-done figure up, because I’m fully confident we will never see this character at mass retail again.

Marvel Legends X-Men Maggott REVIEW & Photos 2022 Bonebreaker BAF Series — 2 Comments

  1. Those maggot accessories are awesome. I was one of the few people who seemed to love this character and felt there was a ton of missed opportunities with him. I do wish, in the comics, that they had given him a more powerful power-set to round-out his terrifying ability. Characters like Jean Grey and Iceman get to be hotties and omega-level mutants, while characters like Maggot have an ability that would truly disgust or frighten most people. A tragic character with an even more tragic miss for character development.

  2. I’ve been waiting on a Maggott figure ever since Toybiz announced one over 20 years ago in that cancelled X-Men wave. Hasbro did not disappoint. I love this figure and I purchased several. A+
