NYCC 2014 Marvel Play Arts Kai Spider-Man Announced!

If I wasn’t expecting Square-Enix to debut a Marvel Play Arts Kai variant figures line at New York Comic Con 2014 by unexpectedly showing off the Play Arts Kai Iron Man figure (and I was not), then I definitely wasn’t expecting the second figure from the line to be revealed as well. Square-Enix oftentimes likes to take their dear sweet time, but I guess they were just too excited about Play Arts Kai Spider-Man to wait!

I’ve been to the Square-Enix booth many a time at various conventions and events, and I honestly cannot remember them ever debuting a new upcoming figure via a concept art drawing in a display case.

Maybe Square-Enix wanted to assure folks that the Play Arts Kai Marvel line would be more than just Iron Man, or maybe they just couldn’t miss the chance to announce their first-ever Spider-Man figure in New York City.
Either way, the Square-Enix Spider-Man Play Arts Kai figure was prominently displayed in the case next to Iron Man at NYCC 2014.

I think the stylized design Square-Enix came up with for the Marvel Play Arts Kai Spider-Man figure is very interesting, with lots of wavy lines breaking up the sections of red and black. I almost feel like I’ve seen a similar design in the current Spider-Verse comics, but I think I’m imagining it since there are so, so many Spider-Men in those comics.

I’m not at all surprise Square-Enix opted for black and red Spidey over blue and red Spidey, but if you’re a blue and red Spider-Man purist, take heart: Square Enix loves minor variant repaint exclusives!

Based on the fact that Square-Enix doesn’t even have a sculpt on display yet, I’d be shocked if we see the Spider-Man Play Arts Kai figure released anytime before summer 2015. Expect a price-point of around $99.

I’ll post an update here and to the Marvel Toy News Facebook page when Square Enix announces more specifics about their 9″ Play Arts Spider-Man Variant figure’s release, and you can follow Marvel Toy News on Facebook to have news and photos sent right to your Facebook Newsfeed.

Early thoughts on the Play Arts Kai Marvel Spider-Man action figure, Marvel collectors? Are you interested, or is this sort of stylized interpretation of Spidey likely not for you?
