Funko SDCC Blackout Ant-Man Hank Pym POP Vinyl!

While they were super-light on Marvel exclusives at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, Funko is clearly aiming to beat every other licensee in sheer quantity of exclusive Marvel toys at SDCC 2015! Thus far, they’ve announced the X-Force Deadpool Chimichanga Truck, a super-lame unmasked Baymax POP Vinyl, and a not-quite-“limited” Cosmic Powers Deadpool Hikari. And now? Funko has revealed a Marvel POP! that everyone is gonna want: it’s the Funko POP Vinyls Ant-Man Black Out figure, featuring the Hank Pym Ant-Man costume!

Funko Ant-Man Hank Pym POP Vinyls Black Out SDCC 2015 Exclusive

The Ant-Man movie may not hit theaters for another month, but the merch effect is now in full swing! And not only has Funko announced two Ant-Man movie Wacky Wobblers, but they’ve also got their first five Ant-Man POP! Vinyl figures announced: standard Ant-Man and Yellowjacket, a Glow-in-the-Dark Yellowjacket exclusive to Amazon, a Glow-in-the-Dark Ant-Man exclusive to Hot Topic, and now the limited-edition “Black Out Ant-Man” POP!

I think that Funko thinks they’re being really clever with their naming of this San Diego Comic Con 2015 Blackout Ant-Man POP Vinyl figure. See, they’ve given this the nickname “Black Out” Ant-Man so we’ll think that it’s either a scene-specific variant of Scott Lang from the movie or just a random colorway.

The thing is, us hardcore LEGO collectors already know exactly what (or should I say, “who”) this black Ant-Man costume is, because LEGO already spoiled it way back at New York Toy Fair 2015, and then again when their latest LEGO Marvel set hit stores last month.

LEGO Ant-Man Final Battle Box Showing Hank Pym as Ant-ManSee, this Blackout Ant-Man costume has already appeared as a figure before: a LEGO Minifigure, to be exact! You can see it clearly named right on the front of the box for the LEGO Ant-Man Final Battle set, too: “Hank Pym”. When you look at that minifigure and then look at the SDCC POP Vinyls Ant-Man Blackout variant, there’s no doubt about it–they’re definitely a match!

So not only is this black and red costume way cooler than the silver, red and black version, but it’s seemingly actually going to be worn by Hank Pym Ant-Man in the movie! Thus, while this is a third release of the same Ant-Man Funko vinyl mold, it appears that it’s actually going to be a unique character rather than just being a straight-up repaint. And not just any unique character–but the founding Avengers Hank Pym! If that doesn’t make the hype and demand for this variant go through the roof, I don’t know what will!

SDCC Funko Blackout Ant-Man POP Vinyls Figure Hank PymThe 2015 SDCC Black Out Ant-Man Funko POP Vinyls figure will be available from July 8-12 at San Diego Comic-Con 2015. This is just a “limited edition” figure with no set edition size, so (hopefully) it won’t be impossible to track it down for close to retail on the afternarket. I definitely expect this to be among the best-selling non-numbered Funko exclusives at Comic-Con, however.

How do you like the slickest Funko Ant-Man figure yet, Marvel collectors? Are you interested in this figure only if it turns out to be Hank Pym, or do you want this wicked-looking black Ant-Man POP regardless of who’s in the suit?

  1. Really hope that Hank does end up still being a superhero by the end of the movie and it’s not another Lego fanwank like Mandarin’s Tank; Lang is so boring, and Pym really deserves a positive spotlight after decades of getting no respect.

    • They’re not going to have him upstage Lang since he’s the star, but Pym may suit up one last time for the final battle or something.
