We’re just one week away from the premiere of the new Captain America: The Winter Soldier movie, and as far as locking up our merchandise dollars goes, Hot Toys means serious business. Last week the new Black Widow Hot Toys went up for order. Yesterday the ultra-limited Golden Age Captain America went up for order and sold out in 12 hours. And today? The titular character of the movie arrives–the Hot Toys Winter Soldier MMS241 is now available for order!

Despite being a modern invention of genius writer Ed Brubaker, the Winter Soldier iteration of Bucky has exploded in popularity since his conception and is now becoming an iconic Marvel character in his own right.

It seems only natural that we should get a Hot Toys Winter Soldier sixth scale figure, and let’s face it–from the moment that Captain America: The Winter Soldier was announced, we knew we would be.

My first impressions of the Hot Toys The Winter Soldier 1/6 figure are generally positive. I’m not always 100% sold on Hot Toys’ facial likenesses, but I can definitely see Sebastian Stan in the head sculpt on this Hot Toys Winter Soldier figure. While the black paint on the Winter Soldier’s face looked like mascara on smaller-scale versions of the character, I think it looks quite menacing on the 1/6 Hot Toys The Winter Soldier movie figure.

I had some minor concerns that Hot Toys might try to do rooted hair for Winter Soldier since he has long hair, but thankfully they opted to go the traditional plastic hair route.

The Hot Toys Winter Soldier costume looks excellent all-around, from the faux-leather patterned top to the black paints with holsters and belt pouches.

The Winter Soldier Movie Masterpiece Series comes with a very healthy assortment of weapons and accessories, including an alternate masked head sculpt (which you have to transplant his hair over to–weird), your typical Hot Toys 1/6 figure display stand, a multitude of alternate hands, removable goggles and a bunch of different weapons.

I’m genuinely shocked there’s no sniper rifle included for poor Bucky to wield, but there’s enough artillery included here that I think I can get by without it. In total, we’ve got a machine gun, three pistols, two daggers, two grenades, a spike (with sheath), a sub-machine gun and a remote bomb launcher (for real). This is one decked-out Hot Toys figure.

The one major pitfall of this The Winter Soldier Hot Toys MMS 241 is a big one: the Winter Soldier’s metal arm comes out looking cheap and disappointing in these prototype images. The metal arm is a huge defining characteristic of The Winter Soldier, so I was hoping Hot Toys was really going to knock my socks off with their rendition of it.

Instead, the Winter Soldier’s plastic “metal” arm honestly doesn’t look much better than the one on the $20 Marvel Legends Winter Soldier figure. I’m not saying that Hot Toys had to go all the way and give us a die-cast metal arm or anything, but the one that they have designed just looks very… basic.

Also, I suspect Hot Toys may have Photoshopped the red star onto the arm in these photos. Weird. I’ll be buying this MMS241 Winter Soldier 1/6th scale figure regardless, as I think it otherwise looks great, but I am a trifle disappointed in the arm. Let’s hope Hot Toys goes back and improves it before Winter Soldier hits production.

I think it’s sort of ironic that they posed the Hot Toys The Winter Soldier figure fighting the Hot Toys Captain America Golden Age figure in the photos, seeing as how that Golden Age Captain America Movie Promo figure is now totally sold-out before Winter Soldier even had a chance to go up for sale. The two do look terrific posed fighting each other, though–I’m really glad I got a pre-order in for Movie Promo Cap before he sold out.

The Captain America: The Winter Soldier Hot Toys Winter Soldier figure is now available for order on the Sideshow Collectibles website. This figure isn’t a super-limited piece like Golden Age Captain America was, so he ought to last quite a bit longer than 12 hours online before selling out.
