SDCC 2015 Exclusive Minimates Ant-Man & Age of Ultron Sets!

Yesterday I talked about the first San Diego Comic-Con 2015 exclusive Funko figure, but that’s not the only exclusive already announced! There have been exclusive Marvel Minimates box sets at San Diego Comic Con for so many years in a row that there was never really a question of whether there would be SDCC 2015 Exclusive Minimates figures–the only real question is how many there will be! And while we still can’t answer with certainty how many total exclusives will be at the event, we do know at least two exclusive sets that will be on sale there: the exclusive SDCC 2015 Minimates Ant-Man & Avengers Age of Ultron Sets!

SDCC 2015 Minimates Avengers Age of Ultron Box Set Exclusive

First up for the San Diego Comic-Con 2015 exclusive Marvel Minimates, we’ve got a set that I fully expect to be a hot seller: the SDCC 2015 Avengers Age of Ultron Minimates Box Set! But wait–what’s that you say? “Didn’t we already get two waves of Minimates Age of Ultron figures, plus a series of blind boxes?” Why, yes–that’s true. But even with those 20+ figures released, there are still essential characters missing from the line!

And thus, Diamond Select Toys is (more or less) completing their Minimates Avengers Age of Ultron lineup with a special five-figure box set that will give us the most integral missing characters: Ultimate Ultron (Final Form), Tony Stark, Iron Man Mark 45, Nick Fury and Iron Legion #1.

This set will be the only place to get the Iron Legion with #01 designation (he’s not available in the Minimates blind boxes), as well as the exclusive place to get an Iron Man Mark 45 Minimate (which is a pretty big deal) and the extra-large Final Form Ultron minifigure. We’ve had a few Tony Stark figures in the past few years, but this is the first movie Nick Fury Minimates figure since the Toys R Us exclusive one released in 2012.

Obviously there are some pretty big names in this set, so I was surprised to see that the $28 set is limited to just 2,000 pieces produced (and being sold through AFX)–I can easily see this set selling through without having to be discounted at all.

Ant-Man Movie LogoThe other set is one that, while exciting, I’m a bit more dubious about the sales of: it’s the second Diamond Select Toys Ant-Man Minimates box set! This set is not to be confused with the specialty store exclusive Minimates Ant-Man Box Set, which contains regular versions of Scott Lang Ant-Man, Hope Van Dyne, Hank Pym and Yellowjacket in Minimates figure form.

SDCC 2015 Exclusive Ant-Man Minimates Box SetThis SDCC 2015 exclusive Minimates Ant-Man set will contain four exclusive figures: Shrinking Ant-Man and Shrinking Yellowjacket (both with translucent body parts), as well as a thug-looking Scott Lang in civilian clothes and… Ant-Thony the Ant. No, seriously–the ant’s name is Ant-Thony. I did not know that, but now that I do, I sort of love him.

The San Diego Comic-Con 2015 Ant-Man Minimates exclusive set is now available for pre-order, and is scheduled to ship out after SDCC for non-attendees. The set retails for $20 and is limited to 3,000 units produced, which is a healthy number–but if the movie is a hit, I could definitely see the demand for an Ant-Thony figure spiking.

Are you digging the first two Marvel Minimates SDCC 2015 exclusives, Marvel collectors? Are you planning to pick up either of these sets, or are you holding out for some comics-based exclusive goodness?

  1. Man the Minimates are going all out on Age of Ultron, we’ve got every character plus all forms of Ultron. I wish lazy Hasbro would care as much.

    • That might have something to do with the fact that every single Minimate with a few exceptions are all based on the exact same body type with a handful of sculpted parts to make them unique. Compare to Marvel Legends figures which require a great deal more engineering to give them a screen-accurate likeness, and movie figures in particular almost always require an entirely unique sculpt to give them that likeness. Every single uniquely sculpted part costs money to engineer, and engineering a entirely new figure is VERY expensive, especially when that figure probably isn’t going to be used again.

Cost of a few unique parts to attach to a body =/= cost of engineering an entirely new figure.
