Thus far I’ve been a little underwhelmed with the deals and rewards codes for this year’s Sideshow Collectibles Spooktacular event–but one area where Spooktacular is definitely delivering the goods is with new statues going up for order! And today, a sort-of Halloween-themed statue was announced that also happens to be the first Marvel product to go up for pre-order during Spooktacular: the EXCLUSIVE Black Cat Premium Format Figure is now up for order, and for a limited time she’s coming with free shipping and 50 bucks in Rewards Points bundled in!
But that’s obviously not the case, as Sideshow was hoarding a big surprise for Spooktacular 2016 that I don’t imagine anyone saw coming: not another enemy for Spidey to face off against but an ally! Peter Parker’s sometimes-lover, sometimes-partner, sometimes-adversary: the Black Cat!
Felicia Hardy is one of my absolute favorite females in the Marvel Universe, so I ended up buying the J. Scott Campbell Black Cat statue last year even though I’m not the biggest fan of the way that statue was posed. It turns out I should have waited, though, because today Sideshow revealed a far more powerful and dynamic, yet no less beautiful Premium Format Black Cat figure!
That head sculpt and paint deco are absolutely spot-on–this just may be the best-looking Black Cat head I’ve ever seen on any statue from any company! Gorgeous! (For those not familiar with this particular modern Black Cat costume, those yellow parts of the costume are meant to represent cat eyes, by the way.)
Standing 22″ tall atop her base, this polystone resin Black Cat statue is easily the largest collectible of the character ever made (and likely the largest and most expensive version that ever will be).
My best guess is that Black Cat’s base is an exploding piece of building that’s being blown apart by one of the Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs, but your imagination may be more vivid (and creative!) than mine.
Black Cat looks terrific displayed alongside the Premium Format Spider-Man and Green Goblin statues! I really hadn’t expected any allies for Spidey in the PF collection, so this is a pretty neat surprise. And considering this is a modern costumed Black Cat and not classic, I can foresee this $499.99 statue ending up with a very low edition size.
In this case, the exclusive is an alternate interchangeable switch-out arm for the Black Cat that’s carrying a bag of stolen jewels. Is this the greatest bonus item in the history of Sideshow Exclusives…? Probably not–but it is a cool alternate way to display this statue, and considering that Black Cat is a cat burglar, it’s one that makes sense and which a lot of collectors are going to want.
The Sideshow Exclusive Premium Format Black Cat Statue is now up for pre-order, and is scheduled to be released in Q4 2017. That’s a long way off, but Sideshow is giving collectors a really incentive to order early with $50 in Sideshow Rewards Points and Free Shipping on this statue–savings that are probably worth about a hundred bucks. Most collectors will want to put this Sideshow Black Cat PF on a payment plan anyway, making the early bird bonus offer an extra-good deal.
What do you think of the Sideshow Premium Format Exclusive Black Cat figure, Marvel collectors? Is this pre-Halloween reveal a Trick or a Treat in your book, and are you planning on picking up the largest Felicia Hardy statue ever?
So I don’t support Disney’s Marvel in any way and I admit I’m not exactly up to date on everything comic related anymore but… has she ever actually looked like this? Either way.. I much prefer the J. Scott Campbell Black Cat statue to this one. I mean it doesn’t look bad, exactly. It just doesn’t look like Black Cat to me.
Yep, I said it in the article. This is her modern costume. The yellow bits are “cat eyes”. 😉
We traded cleavage for cat eyes? I call shenanigans!
“Those eyes… those horrible yellow eyes!”
Pass.
It doesn’t seem like too long ago these statues were $300-325 tops. I used to be into collecting these but I just can’t do it at the prices today. How high will the prices continue to go?
The quarter scale statue is likely to be a dying breed within the next 5-10 years. It’s simply becoming too expensive to produce and ship at this scale. And with factory workers’ wages increasing dramatically, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Premium Formats regularly selling for $550-$600 within the next year.
Sideshow is doing their best to accommodate for this with $50 reward points and free shipping–effectively giving customers $100 off–but there’s no question many collectors are being priced out of the 1:4 market these days.
And display space is another factor. These are huge and unless you have a warehouse to display them in you can only fit so many. That makes some of the smaller sized statues more appealing.
