SDCC 2015: ThreeA Toys Spider-Man Figures Revealed!

The week of San Diego Comic-Con 2015 is not the week I would have chosen for an exhaustive move into a new home, but alas–no use crying over late coverage. That said, I’ve got a lot to catch up on now, including the latest from ThreeA Toys. We’ve known for over a year now that 3A Toys Spider-Man figures have been in the works, and at SDCC 2015 last week we finally got to see what the artists at 3A Toys have been working on…

Spider-Man 3A Toys Figure at SDCC 2015

After starting off with three armored/robotic characters (Iron Man, Doctor Doom and Ultron), the ThreeA Toys Marvel figures line is finally set to expand into the uncharted territory of characters that don’t usually wear armor with their first 2016 Marvel figure: Spider-Man!

As usual, 3A won’t just be releasing one version of Spider-Man–to get the most out of their tooling (and licensing) dollars, they’ll be releasing several of them. Generally, 3A Toys produces two mass-produced colorways for each Marvel 1/6th scale figure that they produce and then an additional 1-2 colorways as Bambaland exclusives. We likely won’t see the exclusive(s) until 1-2 weeks before they go up for sale.

Comic Con 2015 3A Toys Black Costume Spiderman Figure CrouchingThe two versions of the 3A Toys Spider-Man that we did get to see at San Diego Comic Con 2015 are a classic red-and-blue Spider-Man and a black costume Spider-Man. These were unquestionably the “no-brainer” choices to be produced as part of the line, as they’re indisputably the most iconic and recognizable Spider-Man costumes.

Even so, neither of these figures feel like their regular counterparts to me–these feel more like the Mark III Spider-Armor and the Agent Venom costumes to me than anything else.

While I’m always game for a fresh interpretation of a classic Marvel character, I’m not overly keen on these particular figures. I don’t know anyone who likes the “duck feet” all these Marvel 3A Toys figures feature, and the barrel-chests and metal undies on these Spideys definitely look bizarre to me–more like Astro Boy than Spider-Man. While this style worked to a greater degree on Doom and Ultron, I’m just not feeling it for Spidey.

Of course, I could still be suckered into buying one of these figures with the right limited-edition variant. With Three A Toys being fans of a white “Ghost” colorway, could a Future Foundation Spider-Man be in the works as a Bambaland web store exclusive? I sure hope so–that’s one variant I’d definitely be willing to overlook any of my stylistic misgivings about this line for.

SDCC 2015 3A Toys Spider-Man FigureBased off past data trends and my own intuition, I’d guesstimate a Q1 2016 release for these figures with a price-point of $219.99 each (with online retailers selling them discounted to around $190 each). I’ll post an update here and to the Marvel Toy News Facebook Page with the pricing and variant details once the ThreeA Spider-Man figures go up for sale later this year.

Now that we’ve gotten our first look at two (of the likely three or four) 3A Spider-Man figures, what do you think, Spidey lovers? Will any of these metal-looking Spider-Men be swinging into your collection, or is this highly-stylized take on Spider-Man not for you?

  1. is it me or does the classic Spidey have a tiny pea brain head sculpt? don’t get me wrong, they look pretty good…
I might just have to preorder from the Bambaland website so I can get the exclusives!

    • Not terrible…
“New interpretations” … which is always good. We dont need the same ol crap being mass produced year after year!
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. These figures are very different, thats what i love about them! The idea of an armored Spidey with a steam punk influence is just plain cool!
