Back at San Diego Comic Con 2014, Funko shocked Marvel vinyl collectors’ wallets when they unexpectedly debuted a half-dozen super-sized 8-10″ Funko Hikari Spider-Man figures at the show. I had a terrible first hour and a half at New York Comic Con 2014 this year, as I immediately got into the Toy Tokyo line at show opening at noon. At 1:25, after 85 minutes and moving four steps forward, I flipped out and walked off.

Funko didn’t get quite as much money from Marvel POP! Vinyls collectors at San Diego Comic-Con 2014 as they would have liked (with Flocked Rocket Raccoon POP Vinyl being the only SDCC 2014 Marvel POP Vinyls exclusive), but they’re making up for missed chances (and dollars!) on the fall 2014 convention circuit. Funko is the king of exclusive toys in 2014. There’s literally no question about it. Funko quite frankly produces more limited exclusives across their POP! Vinyls, Hikari and Mystery Mini figures in a single year than basically every other major toy company out there all put together. And oftentimes, I love Funko exclusives a whole lot more than I do their regular releases. But sometimes, Funko comes up with an exclusive that is just unspeakably lame. How much Deadpool is too much Deadpool? You probably reach a saturation point where you’ve just plain had enough Deadpool–but I haven’t reached that point yet. And apparently, neither has Funko! I’m turning 29 today for the fourth time, and Funko is giving me exactly the Marvel toy news birthday present that I would wished for (presuming a new Bowen Designs Marvel contract wasn’t an option): a half-dozen new classic X-Men Funko POP! Anybody besides me who’s read every Big Hero 6 comic book every published–when they were published–raise your hands. Anybody? Anybody…? I didn’t think so. Guardians of the Galaxy was a rare heavily-promoted blockbuster summer movie that really and truly did surprise almost everyone with its success and quality. And while most merchandisers were banking on Rocket Raccoon and/or Star-Lord to become everyone’s favorite characters from the film, the runaway favorite character from the movie turned out to be the most-loved tree man ever: Groot! Trying to collect Funko POP! Vinyls is a serious undertaking. The number of products Funko is releasing now on a yearly basis is downright insane, and Funko gives out exclusives like candy. Tracking down all of the exclusives is expensive business–but far better than waiting and paying aftermarket prices for them later on, as Funko exclusives are never reissued.
