When photos popped up this week of almost every other announced figure however, I assumed Funko was holding onto this as a big Toy Fair 2015 reveal. Going into the Guardians of the Galaxy movie release last summer, everyone (including me) had pegged Rocket Raccoon as the character who would be the breakout star of the film. Things didn’t work out that way. Instead, Groot (and Dancing Baby Groot) ended up claiming the hearts and minds of millions of moviegoers in 2014–as well as the bulk of new collectibles shown off since the movie’s premiere. Up until now, I’ve had a futile hope that the Funko Hikari Spider-Man series of vinyl sofubi figures would be a finite collection, easily completed by purchasing the half-dozen Spider-Man Hikari figures that debuted at SDCC 2014. After all, all four of the Funko Spider-Man Hikaris that have been released/announced for purchase up until now have been ones that premiered at SDCC. Back in October, Funko shocked the Funko Hikari Sofubi Vinyl collecting world when they unveiled a whole display case of Funko Hikari Groot vinyl figures at New York Comic Con 2014. We didn’t have long to wait until the first one went up for pre-order the following week, but that was another shocker, as Funko announced the edition size on the standard Groot Hikari figure as 5000–by far the single largest run of any Hikari. It seems like Funko has come back down to Earth for their first Groot variant, though–the Funko Hikari Planet X Groot figure is limited to just 1000 and now up for order!

If there’s one thing out there that adult collectors love, it’s nonsensical variants of main characters like Spider-Man and Batman (right…?). Funko already conquered Batman fans’ wallets with a double-digit number of Funko Hikari Batman vinyl figure variants, and now they’re preparing to unleash their fourth Funko Hikari Spider-Man!
