The Marvel Play Arts Kai figure that got me the most excited at the New York Toy Fair 2015 Square-Enix booth was the one that actually wasn’t on display at all: it was the concept art for the Play Arts Kai Venom figure!

I know most folks have been overall very happy with the last few Marvel Legends Thor figures that Hasbro has released, but I’ve never been fully satisfied. As nice as those figures are, I don’t feel like they capture the power and majesty of the God of Thunder. But where I feel like Hasbro falls a tad short, coming off of over a decade of producing Final Fantasy figures, Square-Enix knows exactly how to make a figure look mythic! And as part of their new-for-2015 Variant line, they’re getting their chance to make Thor look really divine: the Play Arts Kai Thor figure is now available for order!

Not only is 2015 on track to be the biggest year ever for long-running toy lines like Marvel Legends, Funko Marvel POP Vinyls, and Hot Toys Marvel figures, but it’s also the year that a slew of new lines are kicking off spotlighting iconic Marvel characters. One of those lines is the Square-Enix Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant line, which gives us unique redesigns of beloved Marvel superheroes. The line kicked off with (yet another) Iron Man in the winter, and now its moved on to its second release: the Play Arts Kai Spider-Man figure is now available for order!

Going into last week’s New York Toy Fair 2015, I thought we’d be lucky if Square-Enix just brought along a prototype of the second Marvel Play Arts Kai figure: Spider-Man.

There were very few unexpected Marvel toy developments at New York Comic Con 2014 last October, but one announcement that did catch me totally off-guard came from the Square-Enix booth, where Square-Enix quietly announced the Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant figures line! There was only one prototype figure on display at the booth, and we’ve had to wait quite a while to see finished photos, but the time is now upon us: the Marvel Play Arts Kai Iron Man figure is now up for order!
