Every time I think that the Marvel Play Arts Kai Variant figure line is over and Square-Enix is done taking my money, they pull me back in! I really, truly thought that the Play Arts Kai Deadpool and Wolverine figures that went up for sale since last summer were the end of Marvel PAK, but it looks like the line has some life left in it! At New York Toy Fair 2017 last month, I was lucky enough to see the Marvel Play Arts Kai Magneto and Doctor Strange figures revealed in-person!Continue Reading →
Have you ever waited so long from when a figure was fully revealed to when it was available for order that when it actually did go up for sale, you thought you’d ordered it months ago…? Yeah–that’s how I feel about the Marvel Play Arts Kai Wolverine figure, which I could have swore I ordered at least 3 months ago. But I did not–at least, not then. That said–the Wolverine Play Arts Kai figure is now up for order–and this time, I really and truly have placed an order for him…Continue Reading →
Square-Enix has been teasing Deadpool lovers worldwide with the unpainted prototype of their upcoming Marvel Play Arts Kai Deadpool figure at events all over the world since this summer, but finally, they’re ready to show all their cards and tell us all of the glorious details of this ‘Pool. Coming our way this spring, it’s what’s destined to be the best-selling Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant figure ever: the Deadpool Play Arts Kai figure is now up for order! Although the price may give those not familiar with this line a little bit of sticker shock…Continue Reading →
It’s been a pretty slow Marvel toy news week (you know things are bad when I have to make posts about figures being on sale), but we did get at least one bite of appetitizing news–from across the world at the Tokyo Game Show 2016 (TGS), no less! When we last saw the Square-Enix Play Arts Kai Marvel line at SDCC 2016, there were two new unpainted figures on display. And this week in Tokyo, we got to see one of them painted: Play Arts Kai Wolverine!Continue Reading →
Given the rampant bootlegging that went on with the Square-Enix Play Arts Kai Marvel figures line and the fact that a new (non-repaint) figure hasn’t been announced for the line in over a year now, I really thought the Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant line was done for. But things are not always as they appear, and Square-Enix in fact brought along two major all-new figures to show off at San Diego Comic-Con 2016: Play Arts Kai Deadpool and Wolverine!Continue Reading →
Given that it’s been almost an entire year since the last two Square-Enix Marvel Play Arts Kai figures were revealed–and also how the whole line is among the most copiously bootlegged Marvel toys I’ve ever seen–I thought that perhaps we’d seen the end of Marvel PAK. But it turns out that Square-Enix had at least three more releases up their sleeves that they’ve now put up for order–all of which repaints, but two of which might as well be Play Arts Kai Carnage and War Machine!Continue Reading →
One month ago at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, Square-Enix gave fans their first glimpse at two new Marvel Play Arts Kai variant figures: the Black Widow we saw painted photos a few weeks ago, and an armored Captain America that painted images of were just revealed this week. I’d been wondering which of the two Avengers was going to be the next to go up for order, and today I got the answer I’d been waiting for: BOTH! The Square-Enix Play Arts Kai Captain America and Black Widow figures are now up for order… but they may end up costing a few more dollars than you’d like…Continue Reading →
One of the things I never quite got around to talking about from San Diego Comic-Con 2015 earlier this month is the unpainted prototypes of the Marvel Play Arts Kai Captain America and Black Widow figures that debuted at the event.
Luckily, Square-Enix has now rendered that a moot point (or at least half of one), as today they sent out the first photos of the painted Black Widow Play Arts Kai figure!Continue Reading →
The Marvel Play Arts Kai figure that got me the most excited at the New York Toy Fair 2015 Square-Enix booth was the one that actually wasn’t on display at all: it was the concept art for the Play Arts Kai Venom figure!
Well, we had to wait an extra four months to see it in plastic form, but the time is here: the first photos of the Venom Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant figure have now been revealed!Continue Reading →
I know most folks have been overall very happy with the last few Marvel Legends Thor figures that Hasbro has released, but I’ve never been fully satisfied. As nice as those figures are, I don’t feel like they capture the power and majesty of the God of Thunder. But where I feel like Hasbro falls a tad short, coming off of over a decade of producing Final Fantasy figures, Square-Enix knows exactly how to make a figure look mythic! And as part of their new-for-2015 Variant line, they’re getting their chance to make Thor look really divine: the Play Arts Kai Thor figure is now available for order!Continue Reading →
Not only is 2015 on track to be the biggest year ever for long-running toy lines like Marvel Legends, Funko Marvel POP Vinyls, and Hot Toys Marvel figures, but it’s also the year that a slew of new lines are kicking off spotlighting iconic Marvel characters. One of those lines is the Square-Enix Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant line, which gives us unique redesigns of beloved Marvel superheroes. The line kicked off with (yet another) Iron Man in the winter, and now its moved on to its second release: the Play Arts Kai Spider-Man figure is now available for order!Continue Reading →
Over the weekend I discussed the two new Marvel Play Arts Kai figures I wasn’t expecting to see revealed at the New York Toy Fair 2015–Play Arts Thor and Venom–but I haven’t stopped to chat about the new figure that I was expecting to see.
The second figure in the Play Arts Kai Marvel figure line was on display at the 2015 Toy Fair for the very first time: the Play Arts Kai Spider-Man figure!Continue Reading →
Going into last week’s New York Toy Fair 2015, I thought we’d be lucky if Square-Enix just brought along a prototype of the second Marvel Play Arts Kai figure: Spider-Man.
But I underestimated Square-Enix. Not only did they have the finished Spidey on display at their booth, but also the third action figure in the lineup, Play Arts Kai Thor, and even concept art for the fourth figure: Play Arts Kai Venom!Continue Reading →
There were very few unexpected Marvel toy developments at New York Comic Con 2014 last October, but one announcement that did catch me totally off-guard came from the Square-Enix booth, where Square-Enix quietly announced the Play Arts Kai Marvel Variant figures line! There was only one prototype figure on display at the booth, and we’ve had to wait quite a while to see finished photos, but the time is now upon us: the Marvel Play Arts Kai Iron Man figure is now up for order!Continue Reading →
