2015 has been a bit quiet for X-Men collectors (and by “quiet”, I mean “barren”), but there’s one company that’s really come through for X-Fans: Kotobukiya. The X-Men ARTFX+ line has been a highly well-received treat thus far, with Cyclops having already pre-sold out at some retailers.

I thought it would be safe to take this week off for our week-long move to a new home, what with this convention happening next week that’s sort of a big deal. See, traditionally, companies save all of their big reveals for San Diego Comic-Con, and so I didn’t expect any new Marvel toy news this week. 2015 is much more likely to go down in history as “the year a lot of awesome X-Men merchandise got cancelled” than as “the year a lot of awesome X-Men merchandise came out”. Disney is putting a hard stop to the production of X-Men collectibles by many of their licensees–but luckily, there are some items already approved and in the pipeline! Ororo Monroe–Storm–has been the subject of some of the longest-running debates in X-Men history. “Who is the most famous X-Woman: Storm or Jean Grey?” “Who is Storm’s OTP: Forge, Black Panther, or Wolverine?” “Who is the greatest leader of the X-Men: Storm or Cyclops?” And perhaps the biggest question of them all: “Which is Storm’s most iconic costume: black or white?” While Funko initially sided with Team White Costume, there’s hope for the other camp: the Hot Topic Exclusive Funko Black Costume Storm has now turned up for sale online and in some Hot Topic stores!

With Bowen Designs still on hiatus until further notice (if not forever), sixth scale Marvel statue collectors are suffering from some serious withdrawal. The king of exclusive figures is at it once again! This week, photos leaked out of the Phillipines of a variety of announced–and unannounced–exclusive Funko POP Vinyls figures scheduled to be released this spring. Some of these are figures that we had heard rumors of, and some of them are totally unexpected. But on the Marvel side of things, we’re now able to see three exclusive variant Funko Marvel POP Vinyl figures for the first time: Black Costume Storm, Unmasked Cyclops and Captain America Unmasked!

When it comes to the Kotobukiya line of Bishoujo statues, I’m one of the harshest critics out there. As much as I love most of Kotobukiya’s offerings, I often find their Bishoujo statues (such as Starfire and Spider-Woman) to be posed both demeaning and objectifying. I saw tons of fresh and exciting upcoming Marvel collectibles at New York Toy Fair 2015 last month, but the single biggest disappointment for me was what wasn’t at the show: the Kotobukiya X-Men ARTFX+ statues quietly announced at NYCC 2014.

Last winter, Marvel collectors were stunned by Diamond Select Toys’ announcement of a Marvel Select Zombie Magneto figure. I remember hearing quite a bit of griping about that figure in the Marvel collecting community, but Zombie Magneto must have done pretty well for himself at retail–because DST will be giving undead Magneto a new deceased friend to play with this summer! Vinyls wave of unique characters was coming to Walgreens in January 2015, containing Venom, Spider-Man 2099, Black Suit Spider-Man and the Punisher. Of all the Marvel-related toys and collectibles released this year that I swore I’d never buy and then ended up collecting anyway, the most doofy of them all are the Marvel Super Hero Mashers. I resisted this ludicrous concept as long as I could, but Hasbro sucked me in with some of my favorite characters. And now they’re at it again–Marvel Mashers Wave 4 has just been released online, containing Iron Fist, Pyro, Electro and Miles Morales Spider-Man!

Most of the exhibitors at New York Comic Con 2014 put out all of their new Marvel collectibles on the first day of the show, but at least one company held something glorious back in reserve. Diamond Select Toys had a great booth and display case full of Marvel toys when NYCC 2014 opened, but the display case got even better later on in the show, when an all-new wave of Marvel Minimates figures appeared–the Marvel Minimates Wave 60 Classic X-Men and Brotherhood of Evil Mutants series!

If there’s a real tragedy about this summer’s X-Men Days of Future Past movie (besides the absurd lack of merch released for the film), it’s that we never really got to see Future Wolverine in action in his stylish future costume.
